I've been in practice for eight years, with my last year working in private practice, and received my Master's degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Valparaiso University in 2003. I have been a licensed counselor since 2005, and am a clinical member of both the American Mental Health Counselors Association (AMHCA) and the Wisconsin Mental Health Counselors Association (WIMHCA).

It is my philosophy that all people have strengths, but all too often we get caught up in "what's wrong," and we lose sight of those strengths. My approach to therapy is to help clients to use their strengths to address "what's wrong," while also addressing how one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors have an influence on each other - and how changing one can help to change the others.

I work with a variety of clients to address various issues:

Adolescents:  Much of my work has been with adolescent clients - especially males - addressing issues including anger, depression, anxiety, ADHD, behavioral choices, involvement with the justice system, problems at school, and relationships with parents.

Parents of Children/Adolescents:  Parenting issues related to setting appropriate boundaries, rules, and limits with children and adolescents; addressing bad behaviors; communication between parents; co-parenting issues and strategies for separated/divorced parents; and parenting issues for blended families and single-parent families (I have done a lot of work with single mothers who have teenage sons).

Individuals:  Men and women, including issues related to parenting, relationships, depression, anxiety, anger, stress, career choices, and life changes such as separation and divorce (with or without children).

Couples:  Issues related to different communication styles, fair fighting, moving forward in a relationship instead of focusing on how the past was different (better or worse), as well as conflict resolution and rebuilding trust.

Background Information
I recently moved to the Madison area from Northwest Indiana, where I worked for a non-profit social services agency, providing individual, group, and family counseling services for clients referred by schools, the courts, and other community service agencies. Prior to working as a counselor, I worked as a children's advocate at a shelter for victims of domestic violence. Currently, in addition to my work as a therapist, I have been teaching graduate courses in counseling at Lakeland College.
