Understanding and Re-directing Your Anger:
For Couples Who Want to Strengthen Their Relationships

Ellyn Hunter, MA, LMFT

"
Anger.  It's the theme of the day. ... millions of people experience the painful effects of anger, including cardiovascular disease, depression, obesity, low self-esteem, migraine headaches, ulcers, poor interpersonal relationships, spouse abuse, child abuse, divorce, alcoholism, drug addiction, lowered job productivity, chronic distress, and broken hearts, to name just a few."
from Dr. Weisinger's Anger Work-out Book

Strengthening your relationship means making changes with how you listen, respond, and interact.  It means becoming more comfortable with a whole range of emotions that don't have to be expressed as anger.

During individual or couple therapy sessions, we will address these issues:

  • Keeping track of when you get angry and why
  • Learning strategies for controlling and redirecting your anger
  • Identifying how anger affects you and your partner
  • Making choices in your emotional responses
  • Changing your communication patterns

Throughout the therapy process, we will also work on changing the experience and occurrence of anger, using several strategies:

  • Anger monitoring
  • Insight and problem-solving exercises
  • Behavioral self-assessments

Sometimes feelings get hurt, and frustration is a natural emotional response--but anger is a choice you can learn not to make.
